The New Method of Planting Yam Seedlings

Growing of Yam Seedlings in bags is a new method of planting yams In Nigeria, this integrated farming techniques enables the farmers to cultivate and produce large quantity of yam seedlings

Items required

  1. Yam Seedlings
  2. Bags
  3. Animal dung
  4. Bamboo trees
  5. Ropes

Procedure

  1. Clearing of Grasses from soil
  2. Spreading of the animal dung to air it
  3. Mix the loamy soil with the animal dung
  4. Tilling small holes in the ground where you will place the bags
  5. Place the bags in the holes that you dug and fill the bag with soil till it gets a little bit higher than half the bag.
  6. Then add the Yam to the bag and make sure that it faces the raising sun (east)
  7. Cover it with a little soil so that it can germinate quickly.

Advantages

  1. It enables farmers to grow large amount of yam in a small portion of land as it doesn’t take up too area of land.
  2. The rain does not wash away the fertilizer away from the soil since it’s in a bag.
  3. The returns are always in high yield.
  4. It requires less or no weeding.
  5. Reduces the chances of the plant and pest disease.

Disadvantages

  1. Bad maintenance leads to poor production.
  2. Too much water can lead to algae and disease to grow alongside the Yams making the yams not healthy.
  3. It can’t send root deep into the soil which makes it lack natural nutrient.
